You are about to embark on an incredible journey of faith. There is no greater decision than the one to step out and follow Christ! Here are some things the Bible talks about as it relates to making things right with God and getting to heaven:
-
Saying, "God, I admit I'm a sinner in need of a Savior" is the first step to following Jesus.
“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins
and purify us from all unrighteousness.”
1 John 1:9 -
Tell God you believe Jesus died to pay the penalty for your sin and rose from the dead to give you new life.
"If you declare with your mouth, 'Jesus is Lord,'
and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved"
Romans 10:9“For God so loved the world, he gave his one and only son,
that whoever believes in Him will not perish but have eternal life.”
John 3:16 -
Tell Him you trust Him to forgive you and give you a fresh start and that you want Him to live in you through His Spirit.
Once Jesus comes to live in you, His Holy Spirit will empower you to understand and live out Christ's teachings (1 Corinthians 2:14-16). Jesus said: "If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free" (John 8:31-32).
By choosing to follow Jesus, you become part of Christ's body. Paul wants you to understand that you serve a purpose within Jesus' body, and everyone who follows Jesus has unique gifts to help the church accomplish its mission (1 Corinthians 12:15–20, 27).
Not everyone's relationship with Jesus looks the same. Your path as a follower of Jesus may not be the same as your friend's, and that's okay.
Here are some practical things to help you follow Jesus:
Bible study: studying God's Word and applying it to your life.
Prayer: listening and talking to God.
Meditation: reflecting and centering on aspects of Jesus and your relationships with him.
Journaling: keeping a written record of your prayer, reading, and meditation with reflections on your growing spiritual life.
Fasting: setting aside time by not eating, not watching TV, or whatever you choose, to give more time to spiritual disciplines.
Celebration and Worship: praising, honoring and offering yourself to God in private and group worship.
Group Discernment and Accountability: voluntary sharing with a group of fellow believers about your life. The group can help you figure out direction with decisions and help to hold you accountable in accordance with scriptures.
Confession: Confessing your sins to God and to those you have wronged, asking forgiveness.
Service: giving time, talents and yourself to others.
Solitude: periods of silence away from people and other distractions.
Giving and Tithing: offering gifts and financial resources to the work of God's kingdom.
Simplicity: learning to focus only on our needs, not our desires.
May God bless you as you begin your new journey!
