Mission Trips: This summer we sent our second team to Nairobi Kenya to minister along side Good Shepherd Africa Gospel Church (GSAGC). Each summer, safety conditions permitting, we travel to Nairobi to partner in ministry with our sister church. Our experiences range from time spent at New Life Orphanage and manual labor on the Good Shepherd campus to visiting Oyugis and building homes for children orphaned by AIDs and HIV.
Oikos:
Oikos (households of faith) is a revolutionary program envisioned by Patrick Murunga from GSAGC. Oikos was created to impact AIDs/HIV orphans in Kenya. Rather than place orphaned children in an orphanage, the idea of Oikos is for the local family members to rally around the orphans. As families choose to take the children into their homes Oikos (and the partner organizations) supplies the family with goods that will allow them to take care of their new larger family. In this way the orphans grow up in a loving family atmosphere and they have a better chance at a bright future.
Our 2006 team had the chance to visit a village where Oikos is currently involved. They visited the home of a 16 year old boy named Calvins who is taking care of his three younger brothers. Calvins spends his days working jobs that pay the equivalent of 35 cents a day to clothe, feed, and send his younger brothers to school. Oikos is currently working to place Calvins and his brothers in the home of a loving family that will nurture and raise them as though they were their own.
We can't wait to see what God does through this amazing project and can't wait to send a team next summer to help further God's kingdom in Kenya.
